Advantages

Disadvantages - what many don't know

Sanitary pads, including their layers, flaps and packaging, are made of up to 90 percent crude oil-based plastic. If properly disposed of, the used sanitary pads are either burned in huge waste incineration plants or, unfortunately, they often end up in the environment. In the latter case, they take up to 500 years to decompose. Another problem is that sanitary towels are often flushed down the toilet (possibly wrapped in toilet paper beforehand). This may be due to ignorance about the correct waste disposal or because there is no trash can. This is not only problematic , because they can cause blockages in the toilet, but also because the pads contaminate the wastewater. 

A menstruating person goes through an average of 456 menstrual cycles in their life. They use around 15,000 - 17,000 sanitary pads or tampons. Considering the costs, pollutants and waste that are generated, sanitary pads are not such a good idea.
