Incontinence - be on the safe side with period panties

Incontinence is still a taboo subject in our society. Many people suffer from it, but no one talks about it.

Incontinence is not something that cannot be treated. On the contrary, in many cases, small changes such as a healthy diet, exercise or weight loss can have great success.

Incontinence – am I affected?

According to current studies, more than 10% of the German population suffers from some form of incontinence at least once in their lives. Worldwide, the figure is an incredible 200 million people.

However, not everyone who loses a little urine is incontinent. Incontinence occurs when there is an involuntary loss of urine over a longer period of time.

Although many people think of older people when they think of bladder weakness, younger people are also often affected. Due to the female anatomy, it is primarily women who have to deal with the symptoms of incontinence.

Incontinence has many faces

The loss of urine can have many causes and manifests itself in different forms.

The most common forms of incontinence can be divided into four groups.

· Stress incontinence Probably the most common form of incontinence in women. Laughing or sneezing causes sudden pressure on the abdominal cavity that the bladder cannot withstand.

· Urge incontinence This results in involuntary, usually gushing bladder emptying because the bladder sends incorrect signals to the brain.

· Overflow incontinence In overflow incontinence, urine cannot flow out due to a blockage in the urethra. Causes for this can be tumors, a narrowing of the urethra or bladder stones.

· Reflex incontinence This form of incontinence is usually caused by a neurological disorder, often as a result of spinal cord damage, strokes or Parkinson's disease.

Causes of stress incontinence

Stress incontinence mainly affects women. In this form of bladder weakness, the urethral sphincter has lost strength and can no longer keep the connection between the bladder and the urethra completely closed.

Abrupt movements such as laughing, coughing or sneezing can lead to urine loss.

The reason for a dysfunction of the urethral sphincter is usually a weakened pelvic floor muscle, which can occur due to pregnancy, childbirth or simply due to old age.

If the weakened muscle network in the pelvic floor can no longer hold the bladder in place, it slips downwards and bladder weakness occurs.

Ways to improve symptoms of incontinence

In the case of a mild form of incontinence, the symptoms can be improved very effectively with regular pelvic floor training. Targeted exercises for the pelvic floor muscles can strengthen them and quickly counteract urine loss.

If the incontinence has other causes, such as neurological or physical illnesses, a specialist can explain suitable treatment options.
